Description:Excerpt from New Testament Hours The series of which this is a volume is a continuation of the Hours with the Bible, to which so much favor has been shown in America. New Testament Hours, beginning with The Gospels: a companion to the Life of Christ, and now followed by the first part of The Apostles: their Lives and Letters, are designed on the same lines, so far as possible, as those on which the Old Testament Hours were written. It is not, indeed, practicable for me, after having published my Life of Christ, to go through the Evangelists again, systematically; but there were so many side-lights on the Great Story, which escaped notice in that Life, or could not be introduced without making it too large, that I felt able to compose "The Gospels," with such a freshness of material as must make it an indispensable companion to the "Life," for all who wish to see their Lord's earthly existence in full and glorious clearness. The Apostles: their Lives and Letters necessarily form an expanded narrative of the "Acts," with the insertion of the Epistles at the proper places, and will, if I be spared to complete my design, carry out the history of the Early Church to the close of the Canon.
