Description:Oloff Stevensen Van Cortlandt (ca. 1600-1683/1684) and his son, Stephanus Van Cortlandt (1643-1700) immigrated from The Netherlands to land at confluence of the Croton and Hudson Rivers, and established their new estate, which grew to exceed 86,000 acres (about a third of present- dau Westchester County). The Van Cortlandt family sold the property in 1941, and in 1953 John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the manor house and about 175 acres to restore the house to its late 18th century appearance. The Van Cortlandt family donated many of the family possessions, and the 1941 sales were traced and repurchased where possible.
