Discussion in Human Affairs

James Howard McBurney
4.9/5 (12426 ratings)
Description:This book is written primarily for undergraduate students in American colleges and universities. We have two specific purposes in view: (1) to explain discussion as a means to better understanding of human affairs and action in human affairs; and ( 2) to develop attitudes and skills which enable people to participate in discussion competently. Our larger purpose, explicit at times and always implicit, is to predispose and equip young men and women to deal with personal and social problems rationally and humanely. Discussion as here conceived is in a very real sense the essence of the democratic process. We hope this analysis of discussion will be one means, however modest, of extending democracy in human affairs. The book is presented in four divisions. Part I provides "An Introduction to Discussion." The five chapters in this section are definitive and philosophical in nature. They are designed to define discussion as a method of solving problems and to relate discussion to other methodologies and to the social scene. These chapters will ordinarily require considerable discussion in class. A mature understanding of the nature of discussion as a fundamental approach in social inquiry has values beyond this knowledge: It gives dignity and stature to the study of discussion, motivates students, and establishes attitudes essential to the best practice of discussion. Part II presents "The Logical Bases of Discussion." If discussion is to lay claim to rational values, students and practitioners of discussion must understand it as a logical method. The steps in reflective thinking, reasoning, and evidence, as they enter into discussion, are analyzed in some detail. Attention is also given to some of the more common obstacles to straight thinking, which are likely to arise in group deliberation. Part III is a manual dealing with "The Management of Discussion." Problems suitable for discussion are considered, and advice is given on preparation, participation, and leadership. The five chapters on participation and leadership present techniques -practical techniques which have been drawn from studies of hundreds of student discussions and adult discussions of many kinds on a great variety of problems. Part IV continues this manual. Here we consider the different types of discussion and the more important methods of organizing and conducting them in the kinds of situations where they find their principal applications. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
