After his assumption of office there ensued some of the strangest episodes in English history. Chatham, as Pitt had now become, sick in body and mind, absented himself from Court and Cabinet and left affairs in the hands of an incapable lieutenant. the author describes the struggle for power which took place between Grafton, holding out in the hope that one day Chatham would return, and an opposition untied only in their dislike of Chatham. The book includes a study of the nature and composition of the political groups in Parliament at a time when parties were just developing.
