She writes of being caught in a riot in Shanghai where sixty people were killed, barely escaping with her life. And she writes of the beauty of China and its persistent mystery. Chinese Ladies at Home, as she called her account of the last days of the Manchu Dynasty, was printed in 1906 but soon went out of print.
