He was elected in the 2008 election. He was formerly the Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi and also a member of the Pan-African Parliament from Ghana. He previously served as Minister of Communications in the Rawlings government. The NDC announced on April 9, 2008 that Mahama had been unanimously endorsed by the party's National Executive Committee as the NDC vice-presidential candidate. He was the running mate of NDC presidential candidate John Atta Mills. John Dramani Mahama Achimota Primary School for his elementary education, then went on to Ghana Secondary School, Tamale for his G.C.E. O and A level education. In 1981, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Ghana, and further obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies, from the University of Ghana, Legon in 1986.
