The Bulgarian commander of Serres orders the residents of Joumaya to leave their homes within two hours. The order finds Annou, daughter of the Vlach merchant Sandros Raskos, already uprooted twice. The first time from Joumaya, from where she secretly left with the Turk Furkan, and the second time from Kavakli in Eastern Thrace, where she and Furkan had set up their home. Annou and her family follow the long caravan of uprooted people on the forced death march, not knowing how many more lives fate has in store for her to live.Two years later, with the surrender of the Bulgarians, Sandros Raskos' family is free to return to their ancestral lands. However, Joumaya no longer exists; the stone houses have become embankments in the firing range of the English and Bulgarians.
