Brenda Gail Webb was born to a poor family in (Butcher Holler) Paintsville, Kentucky to Melvin "Ted" Webb (19061959) and Clara Marie (Ramey) Webb (19121981). The youngest of 8 children, she was the only one born in a hospital. Her family moved to Wabash, Indiana when she was four. She started singing along with country and pop songs on the radio, and though shy as a child, she was encouraged by her mother to sing for visitors to the house.
