Since the morning, too, he had felt as if his bosom was laid bare, as if an enormous eye was engaged in gauging its secrets; and the sense of this eye being constantly upon him was as if the sharpest steel was being thrust into his flesh. His life consequently became, as he had told Esther, more insupportable every moment. But the sudden and unexpected death of Doctor Basilius singularly simplified the question. It added a material impossibility to the moral imppssibility which Eusebius's reasoning faculties had already set up as a dyke or dam wherewith to check the wanderings of his imagination.
