Description:This book is a crosscultural study of transnational modernity as exemplified in the bilingual works of Lin Yutang (1895-1976). Lin became well-known in 1930s China as the "Master of Humor",and later attained popularity in America with his works in English as a philosopher, critic, novelist, and translator of "China". Banned for over three decades in China for political reasons, Lin Yutang is now being simultaneously reclaimed in both China and America as one of the most important modern Chinese writers and as a pioneering Chinese American diasporic writer. This study engages these two interconnected cultural spaces and offers a critical examination of Lin's writing/translating works against a transnational Chinese American milieu. An examination of Lin's works in both Chinese and English reveals that Lin's acts of writing/translating highlight a central concern of modern China and the Chinese American diaspora: how to become universally "modern" while remaining ethically and nationally "Chinese". This critical reading of Lin's bilingual narratives reveals how Lin Yutang negotiates, in his responses to a number of key modern problematics such as politics, aesthetics, nationalism, imperialism, ethnic representation, feminism, and immigrant identity, an integrated alternative modernity out of the East/West dichotomy. Using cultural studies as a point of departure, this interpretive analysis places Lin's crosscultural "translation" in a larger context by examining a number of other major writers and critics, including Pearl S. Buck, J.E Spingarn, George Meredith, Gu Hongming, Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren, Liang Shiqui, Yuan Zhonglang, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Frank Chin.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
