Though it was separated by the firmament from His visible presence, God left not the lower world without witness of Him. "The invisible things of Him from the creation of the world were clearly seen, even His eternal power and Godhead;" and the firmament, as being in a sense, the medium of communication between the world above and the world below, might naturally be supposed to bear this witness in the most conspicuous manner. Above all His other works did the heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament shew His handy work. The firmament though intercepting the rays of His own immediate glory, became the seat of those luminaries which were His appointed representatives as the givers of light below. His Church being separated and like the dry land, made fit to bear flower and fruit by the influence of heat and light, and of the orderly succession of the seasons. Lights were set to shine upon her and "to be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years." They that were wise shone over her "as the brightness of the firmament," and they that were to "turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever."
