When her memory returns, Jennifer Redmond remembers the real reason why she is in Scotland: she has a loveless marriage and has left her husband, Peter. Before her accident, Jennifer meets Scottish hotel owner Angus Cameron and they are immediately attracted to one another. Peter Raymond believes that due to his expected promotion within an American company, that a loyal wife is essential and he will do and say anything in order to persuade her to return home to Berkshire with him. He eventually succeeds. Angus Cameron has lived for many years in Australia and has a secret past. He has fallen in love with Jennifer and when he realises that she is returning home with Peter, he eventually goes back there and becomes a recluse. Peter tells Jennifer about his promotion and plans to take her and his secretary Susie to America on business. Whilst there, Peter and Susie start an affair. Later, one of Peter's junior colleagues discovers this and sends two anonymous letters to Jennifer. Meanwhile, their son Robert announces the date of his marriage to Claire and Jennifer has to keep quiet about it until after the wedding... This is an eternal triangle with many twists and turns.
