Anthony Edwards joined ‘Ship Towage Ltd’ at the age of 15, when, like all new recruits, he started as cook. He stayed for nearly seven years, then left for warmer climes and to pursue his dream of sailing. His leaving was concurrent with the slow demise of the steam tugs as they were scrapped one by one to make way for a new era and new vessels.Life aboard the steam tugs enjoyed only basic comforts – a rough blanket was the only bedlinen, and cooking for the nine members of the crew was done on coal-burning stoves in very small galleys. The hard environment, long hours and ever-present dangers helped to build up a sense of camaraderie and of belonging among the men aboard.'Uplifting and a great tale - I can't wait for the next instalment.
