When originally released, this diary caused quite the stir in London, first because it was believed to be one of the most detailed autobiographical accounts of Protestant-Ascendant Ireland, and shortly after because it was revealed to be a fraud. However, now, far from a fraud, it should be thought of as a fanciful masterwork of fiction. Both Cleone Knox and her supposed descendant, Alexander Kerr, were characters crafted with evident care for detail. The diary was first taken as a scholarly work because so much scholarly work indeed went into this work of fiction.
