In 1773, the Scottish explorer James Bruce heard that the Book of Enoch may have been in Ethiopia, so he traveled there and procured three copies. In 1821, Richard Laurence, a professor of Hebrew at Oxford, produced the first English translation. Fragments of ten Enoch manuscripts were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.
