James I, King of Scots, 1406-1437

Evan Whyte Melville
4.9/5 (31299 ratings)
Description:A study of the life and reign of King James I of Scotland (1406-1437). The youngest son of Robert III, he fell heir to the Scottish throne at the age of eight when his older brother died suspiciously in the custody of their uncle. Captured by pirates at the age of eleven, he spent the next eighteen years in English captivity. There he met and married Joan Beaufort, and may have written the poem "the Kingis Quair", about his captivity and his first sight of his future wife. Returning to Scotland in 1424, he set about restoring the rights of the Scottish Crown, and dealt ruthlessly with his opponents, especially his cousins the Albany Stewarts, who were executed the year after his return. A controversial monarch he has been seen by some as a "lawgiver" monarch who strengthened the Scottish Crown, and by others as a greedy tyrant. In early 1437 he was murdered in the Blackfriars of Perth but the impact of his short reign would shape the future policies and experiences of the Stewart dynasty in Scotland. In this full-length study of James I's reign, Balfour-Melville explores in detail the king's legal, social, ecclesiastical, military, and financial policies, and attempts to give a clear account of James' career. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
