They met at a college in Ireland, marrying after their college graduation, then moving to England into Edward’s boyhood home with his guardian, Matthew Butler.While living in England, Albert Todd, Edward’s college friend, had written Edward from New York several times convincing Edward of the great opportunities there were in the United States; especially in Essex County, New York, with the beauty of the area along the lakes and rivers, the fir, pine and spruce trees, the mountains, and the clean, fresh air of the countryside. Also, Albert stressed the freedom and the adventure in living there.Albert promised Edward, an engineer, employment as an assayer at the iron ore mine he managed, along with housing for him, Bridget, and their two children, Mary Kate, age four, and Matthew, age six.
