Warsaw: Her Faith, Her Fight, Her Fate

Unknown Author
4.9/5 (9066 ratings)
Description:"CONTEMNIT PROCELLAS - DEFYING THE TEMPEST - is the courageous motto Warsaw has inscribed on its coat of arms. It has often inspired the capital's inhabitants with the strength to hold out. And its enemies have come to realize - mostly too late - that a city such as this can never be crushed or subjugated. The eyes of the world have been focused on Warsaw three times in the course of recent years. In the first September of war, when German bombs rained down on the city, the story of Warsaw's defense and of its heroic Mayor became legendary. This proud legend still lingered when President Roosevelt called Poland "the inspiration of the world." But in time it faded, becoming merely the first entry in a long register of destruction and suffering. At Easter, 1943, whispered rumours of the lone battle of the doomed in the Warsaw Ghetto began to filter through the closed frontiers, of cruelty and murder on a scale hitherto unknown. It was impossible to confirm this news, and it was more comfortable to reject it. In August and September of 1944 Warsaw figured in wireless communiqués and the world press for the third time, but in terms carefully chosen to cloak an embarrassing situation. Mention of the "Warsaw Rising" pricks many a conscience even today. Hence the diverse insinuations and official silences with regard to it. But the slow objective judgment of history will one day elucidate the whole drama. Warsaw has no need to fear the verdict, and can afford to wait. It is not the first time. In Warsaw's most tragic days - August and September of 1944 - the thoughts of all exiled Poles were with their beloved city. A Citizen's Committee for the Reconstruction of Warsaw was formed in London by people whose most ardent desire was to return to the ruined capital and to work at its reconstruction. But they were prevented from doing this by political developments which cut them off from Poland. The present publication is intended as a modest expression of their loyalty to the city, and of their faith in its brighter future, in days of real liberty and independence."We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
