Description:This third volume in a series devoted to the activities of the Jesuits in Spanish North America, this work is the logical successor of Jacobsen’s “Educational Foundations of the Jesuits in Sixteenth-Century New Spain” and Dunne’s “Pioneer Black Robes of the West Coast,” two books which have met a flattering reception and have done much toward enlarging the perspective of Western Hemisphere history in one of its important phases. Other volumes in the same series are already prepared and, it is hoped, will be published without undue delay.Some books are called “scholarly” because they are unfinished. The staging and debris accumulated in the process of constructing the edifice have not been cleared away. This volume meets a higher test of scholarship.
