Mikhail is not always a likeable character, and he changesslowly. Even as others try to help him, his attitudes and prejudices often pushaway the kinds of people who are best suited to help him survive: "Howlong have I been here?" These filthy Chinese peasants did not understandRussian and Mikhail did not speak Chinese. Why should he bother to learnChinese? These backward people without hope spoke only gibberish. "Stinking peasants." These contrasts between different cultures, social and politicalperspectives, and the adventures that take place during Mikhail'stransformative process bring the story to life, giving it an edge and advantageover many historical novels. Mikhail must change immensely to make a new lifefor himself that embraces others not of his usual class.
