Description:Paul Henry de Kruif (3/2/90 Zeeland, MI-2/28/71 Holland, MI) was a microbiologist. He's noted for his 1926 book, Microbe Hunters. This wasn't only a long-time bestseller, it's remained high on lists of recommended reading for science & inspired many aspiring physicians & scientists. He graduated from the University of Michigan (BA/PhD 1912/16). He entered service as a private in Mexico on the Villa Expedition & afterwards served as a lieutenant & captain in WWI in France. Because of his Sanitary Corps work, he'd occasional contacts with leading French biologists. After returning to the University as an assistant professor, he briefly worked for the Rockefeller Institute. Some essays written while working for the Institute led to his dismissal. One of the scientists featured in Microbe Hunters, Ronald Ross, took exception to how he was described, so the British edition had to delete that chapter to avoid libel.
