The Mind of John Overton

Kenneth S. Cooper
4.9/5 (27982 ratings)
Description:John Overton played a significant role in the politics of the Jacksonian era. He has been called "the architect of the grand strategy" that placed Andrew Jackson in the White House. But politics was only one aspect of Overton's career. He was an early leader in the economic development of Tennessee. He served as a judge during the early years of his state's history, and in that capacity did much to shape Tennessee's legal system during the formative years. John Overton's home, Travellers' Rest, is now maintained for visitors by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee, so that people today can see where he lived. The idea for this book grew out of a lecture prepared for docents who guide visitors through Travellers' Rest. Because of careful research in the restoration of the house, visitors can learn much about how John Overton furnished his home. But it is also possible to learn about his thoughts; can we discover how he furnished his mind? The effort to answer this question led to an inventory of the books he had owned and the study of his extant writings, particularly his court opinions. He recorded his opinions in his pioneer legal work, the first two volumes of Tennessee Reports, often referred to as Overton's Reports. A close reading of the opinions revealed that they contained a wide variety of ideas and give evidence of how much he drew from his study of books. Since many people find the furniture of a man's mind at least as interesting as the furniture of his house, it seemed a pity that Overton's ideas should remain buried in old legal reports, not readily available to readers. For this reason, it was decided to prepare an account of John Overton's education and publish a selection of his thoughts on various topics. It was not intended that such a work would be for lawyers; rather it is published for readers who delight in learning about the history of the country and the state. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
