Description:This study starts from the observation that the »Historia von D. Johann Fausten« (»Faustbuch«), which was published in Frankfurt in 1587, was exceedingly influential and popular. This Popularity, it is argued, is due to its close integration into a contemporary network of techniques, practices and discourses. In order to reconstruct parts of this network in the 1580s and early 1590s, I examine, amongst other things, the various adaptions of the »Faustbuch«, the role of the persecution of witches and wizards, the impact of the transformations of the postal system and the calendar, and strange symbols appearing on the outside of one’s body.
