Marienbad & Beyond

Dovid Leitner
4.9/5 (13457 ratings)
Description:The growth of this magnificent spa town of Marienbad, situated in Czechoslovakia near the German border, developed during the 20th century, that was helped by the publicity created in the press by visits from King Edward VII of England, Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, and Queen Wilhelmina of Holland, to name just a few.It soon began to attract many Jewish clients from all walks of life, and it became the most popular holiday destination in Europe. Many of Jews, including the Hasidic, Religious, Zionists and Reform mingled together in a truly unique way. . Some of the guest even travelled over 1000 kilometres and often stayed for two months in Marienbad. Here everybody was guaranteed a truly relaxing holiday. My father owned a large 60 bedroom, kosher hotel that served the Rabbinic Royalty of that generation, whilst my fathers uncle owned an additional kosher hotel, with over 100 rooms. During the summer season, they served over 2500 meals per day and their famous guest included the Grand Hasidic Rabbis of Alexandre, Belz, Bobov, Ger, Satmar and Vishnitz, apart from many European and German Rabbis. The book ‘Marienbad & Beyond’ provides a window into this rich history and culture of yesteryear, with a 60 page Picture Gallery that alone contains nearly 200 photos and brilliant pictures of these bygone times. It also contains many anecdotes and personal recollections of these bygone years.Marienbad was so popular that in August 1937, it was chosen to host the 3rd International Conference of Agudas Israel with over 8000 delegates and visitors attending, and my father was appointed to be the Organising Secretary for this conference. This was a week long conference where all relevant problems and topics pertaining the Jewish People were discussed, including Jewish education for boys, the Beth Yaakov Movement for girls, higher education, the Jewish Press, the future of Palestine and the Peel Commission. This large gathering took place only one year before the town was annexed by Nazi Germany, and everything changed drastically.AND THENAfter receiving information from a friendly local police officer, that the Germans were about to invade Sudetenland, they were forced to flee Marienbad at one moments notice, and travelled to Prague. Shortly after his arrival there, my father awoke one morning to be informed that his photograph was on the front page of the Nazi newspaper, as a ‘WANTED MAN’, and his only crime was ‘ Having brought Jews to Marienbad in 1937’. He now was desperate to flee the country as soon as possible, the country where he was born and he’s always called ‘home. His only option was to travel to a frontier town and attempt to take a train across the border into Poland. Whilst standing at the station platform at Mahrisch-Ostrau, a station that was predominantly occupied by German soldiers, he was approached by a complete stranger, dressed as a train driver, who offered help. But could this unknown man be trusted? Who was he?Be inspired whilst you enjoy reading the book that can best be described as ‘A treasure trove of Jewish life in 20th century Europe. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
