Hershon Schwartz, a Jewish refugee from Eastern Europe, influenced by Tolstoy’s experiments in developing an idealistic society with equality for all, purchases a farm in rural South Africa. At once he is at odds with the ruling Afrikaans farmers. He marries Analie Wepenaar, a young Afrikaans woman. Liana, a delightful, strong-willed and independent girl is born.The plot is heightened and exacerbated by worsening drought, the burning of a barn containing food for the lifestock, Hershon and Analie’s deteriorating marriage, and Hershon’s illness. Liana, their daughter, raised on the African veldt, with African beliefs imbued in the terrain and people she deals with, yet ‘educated’ on Western fairy tales, obsessively tries to help her father save the farm with magic realistic contrivances. Tension climaxes during a confrontation between Hershon and Kobus Meiland, a rising Broederbond leader and Analie’s rejected suitor.Part Consequence. Paulina, the family servant, and Boneman, a homeless Bantu man, protect Liana from her mother’s wrath. Liana, is torn by her parents conflict but finds the strength to face down the demons of the past when she is sent to live with Hershon’s sister in Johannesburg.Summation.
