Description:Following the end of the Cold War in Europe, the former East-West binary model of European identity has been replaced with different patterns. Northern Europe (and/or the idea of the North) is one such territory/concept now being more under the microscope. Taking its title from a fin de sicle Nordic literary movement, this book offers new ways of thinking about modernism, modernity and music within a focused geographical arena. The roots of Scandinavia's artistic pre-eminence lie in the final decades of the nineteenth century. Music was an integral part of this process of aesthetic and intellectual awakening. This volume will reappraise the work of Sibelius, Nielsen and their contemporaries, but it also reassesses the wider implications of the 'nordic breakthrough' in neighboring areas such as arts, literature and architecture. Music's Nordic Breakthrough adopts an interdisciplinary methodology and expands the notion of the 'nordic zone': a new understanding of the region emerges as an arena of cultural activities and patterns of exchange sharing common occupations. The book constitutes a timely attempt to re-map a critical appreciation of early twentieth-century modernism through a nordic lens. The thematic approach offered reveals the complex interaction of networks, individuals, ideologies and the transfer of ideas. The book will be of interest to musicologists working in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century repertoires, as well as those more broadly interested in modernism in music and its neighboring arts. The book will also offer important reading for art historians, theatre scholars and literary critics.PHILIP ROSS BULLOCK is Professor of Russian and Music, University of Oxford.
