Description:Jon Peterson has been making art since the early 1970's, when he quit his job as an aeronautical engineer and enrolled at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. After getting a master's degree in painting and sculpture, he had several exhibits of his work at Joni Gordon's Newspace gallery. As part of the group of downtown LA artists known as "The Young Turks," Peterson distinguished himself with a series of "bum(bad) shelters,"environmental sculptures placed throughout Skid Row and Little Tokyo that invited habitation by the homeless people that populated the empty lots and alleys around his loft. After expanding the shelter series to New York City, Washington DC, and other urban centers, Peterson returned to his first love, painting.
