The Cross and the Pagoda, The Life of Bishop Ford of Maryknoll

John F. Donovan
4.9/5 (20470 ratings)
Description:When Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America ordained its first group of priests in 1918, it was to South China that the young Maryknoll Missioners departed. China had long known the presence of missionaries. As early as 1292, Italian Franciscans had reached Peking. In the nineteenth century attempts to "convert the heathen" had accompanied Western commerce in to China - the privilege of preaching and the traffic in opium were alike protected by Western military power. But despite the efforts of Catholics and Protestants, China was not converted. Colonialism, capitalism, and Christianity were inextricably linked in the minds of the Chinese who regarded foreigners and priests with equal mistrust. The tangle of blunders, injustices, and failures of understanding that typified the years of Western dominance in China was the background against which Francis Xavier Ford of Maryknoll pitted his love and his life. His career as a young priest and as a Bishop spanned the fateful years of China's evolution from powerless colony to militant foe of the West, form the Nationalist Republic to the People's Republic of China. It was a time in the Church's history when mission efforts in China were dispersed among many national jurisdictions, when there was little overall direction from Rome and small evidence of collegiality. By and large, Bishop Ford had to work out his own method of establishing the Church in China. His deep sensitivity to the people and his insight into the shortcomings of the older modes of evangelization anticipated in many aspects the findings of Vatican II. The story of his life, and of the Maryknoll mission in China is recorded here along with the events that led to his arrest as an imperialist spy and his death in a canton prison in 1952.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
