The fruit of pitchblende is the tearing apart of the atom, and it is holy because in its roundness, its rotteness and death it symbolizes the everlasting strife of man's intellect with the world. All these meet in the breaking of the atomic circle - "the Infinite raped in Alamogordo" - look at the woodcut on page 39 showing a Kabbalist with ten emanations of the Absolute and see how without its Hebrew characters it might illustrate as well an up-to-date exposition of molecular theory.
