Alongside works by this household names, Small Treasures pays equal attention to many of the so-called minor masters, particularly artists active in the university town of Leiden. It was there that a highly refined painting style known as fijnschilder (fine painting) developed. For more than a century, its practitioners, among them Gerrit Dou and Franz Mieris the Elder, produced countless small-scale works in this manner.This book is unique in that it contains full-size illustrations of the paintings exhibited in Small Treasures. Its publication coincides with an exhibition organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
