The author says in his introduction, A logical nmne for this work would have been The Book of Nuts; however, some knowledgeable people have observed that this title would be ludicrous-and could subject the book to ridicule by the literati, a witty allusion to the variety of connotations the word nut' has acquired in our language.Chapters are devoted to each of the 12 most important nuts or what are cmnnonly regarded as nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, pecan, and coconut. By strict botanical definition many of then are not nuts, especially the peanut and the sunflower seed.
