Description:The story of one of Melbourne's most colourful and eccentric evangelical ministers - Rev. Walter Frederick Betts (1892-1977). His most notable work being missioner of the Fitzroy Methodist Mission during the depression years. A mini revival took place around 1932 in which the church grew, souls were saved, the mission settled it's previous debts, held evangelistic rallies, open air evangelism, all night prayer meetings, and unique meetings dedicated to attacking the prevailing modernism and higher criticism of the day. Betts was a theological student during the years the Victorian Methodist Church took a critical approach to the Bible, introducing Arthur Peake's controversial commentary to the seminary. Instead of imbibing these Bible denying views, Betts followed in the footsteps of W. H. Fitchett and his mentor J. H. Cain at Wesley Mission (Lonsdale street), preaching the old fashioned gospel of Wesley. To Betts this meant being right on the book and the blood, belief in the fundamental doctrines of the faith, and emphasis upon scriptural holiness and baptism in the Holy Ghost subsequent to conversion. Walter Betts resigned from what he called "modern Methodism" in 1953, and didn't go quietly. The press was ablaze with headlines covering the "rebel cleric" who said "denominations were becoming abominations." Betts went on to form the People's Church, based in Kew. A fascinating and well written account of a very interesting character. We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
