John Ogilvie: A Jesuit in Disguise, 1579-1615 (Saints of the Isles)

Eleanor McDowell
4.9/5 (32967 ratings)
Description:Born in 1579 of noble parentage, John Ogilvie was raised in the Calvinist tradition and sent abroad at a young age to be educated. During a period of spiritual contemplation he converted to Catholicism and was ordained a Jesuit priest. Despite the risk of preaching in a reformed Protestant Scotland, he returned to the land of birth in the disguise of a horse dealer. Within a year he was imprisoned, put on trial and later hanged for refusing to recognise the jurisdiction of the King. Despite an ignominious death, John Ogilvie’s influence endures. He is Scotland’s only Catholic post-reformation martyr, beatified in 1929 and canonised in 1976 following a miraculous healing of John Fagan, a 49 year old Glasgow man. St John Ogilvie’s steadfast faith and courageous spirit reinforce the need to uphold the right of religious liberty, as we mark the 400th anniversary of his death on 10th March 2015.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
