Yale Kamisar (born 8-29-1929) is the Clarence Darrow Distinguished University Professor of Law Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Michigan Law School as well as a tenured professor at the University of San Diego School of Law. Professor Kamisar, a graduate of Columbia Law School, joined the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School in 1965, and has taught at San Diego since 2002. Kamisar is a noted legal scholar in the field of criminal law and criminal procedure. The United States Supreme Court cited his law review articles, "The Right to Counsel and the Fourteenth Amendment: A Dialogue on 'The Most Pervasive Right' of an Accused" from the University of Chicago Law Review and "The Right to Counsel" from the University of Minnesota Law Review in deciding Gideon v. Wainwright, the 1963 case establishing the right of indigent defendants in some criminal cases to have an attorney appointed to represent them. The Supreme Court also cited Professor Kamisar's article "Equal Justice in the Gatehouses and Mansions of American Criminal Procedure" in deciding Miranda vs. Arizona, the 1966 case creating the "Miranda warnings" that the Court ordered the police read to suspects in criminal cases before questioning. Professor Kamisar also wrote the casebook "Modern Criminal Procedure" with Wayne LaFave, Jerold Israel, and Orin S. Kerr.
