Description:The Promise is the story of a young Canadian soldier going off to war against his parent's wishes marching straight into that man made hell on earth known as the Battle of the Somme. He has made a solemn promise to both his sister Ginny in Toronto and his sweetheart Chelsea in England that he will return. The novel carries a very strong antiwar war theme, portraying the horror and waste of a whole generation of young men with little to show in the way of victory or territorial gain. Generals on both sides having a callous disregard for the appalling waste of manpower involved in relentless suicide charges at each other's lines. It asked the question how can men pray to the same god for victory, as they slaughter each other by the thousands.
