Description:A science fiction novel of the dystopian near future set in the sewers of Seoul-Pyongyang, Mimosa Sector follows a long trajectory of memoirs and palimpsest-like stories: Heart of Darkness, To the Lighthouse, Confessions of an English Opium Eater, and Wide Sargasso Sea. On the surface, Mimosa Sector is a war story in the vein of Lucius Shepard's Life in Wartime. It follows the story of a disaffected trio of friends through the trauma of being betrayed by the Army; its backdrop is a bleak future in which the military is supervised by a corporate government out to dominate the hemisphere. Herzog, an infantry grunt, has the misfortune of suffering a "brain burn" during a formal interrogation/debriefing after his squad accidentally runs across a classified military mission in Brazil. During the interrogation, he loses many of his memories, including those of Rhee (his best friend) and Lara (a woman with whom he had recently fallen in love). We follow Herzog's nostalgic quest to find the lost Lara, which is parallel to his search for his lost memories.
