Description:Jeremy Hudson leaves New York City in search of a refuge where he hopes to revive a failing writing career and comes to the small upstate city of Utopia Falls. But instead of completing the novel he needs to finish, Jeremy becomes fascinated by the history of the city and decides to write about it. As he explores the history of the town that everyone calls “The Falls,” he has to confront the animosity between longtime residents--many of them descendants of the first settlers--who call themselves Old Falls, and a generation of new residents who have radically changed the life of the city, a change Old Falls has come to hate as they see shops long familiar to Old Falls replaced by trendy stores such as Artifax, RetroNow, or Kyle/Style, selling what Old Falls did not understand and cannot afford to buy, family restaurants run by people Old Falls knew replaced by pricy eateries like Just Green, Mauvais Garcons, Bio Fare, or Sushi San, and old favorite haunts like Jerry’s Bar and the Old Oak Tavern compete with the Not Till 2 AM! Dance party at Club Club and the late-late show at the super gay New Utopia Music Hall whose 3 AM headliner this week is Grotti/Grlz, the hard-driving Lesbo-Punk-Electro-Pop band. Now weekend tourists wander the streets and tweet to friends that they are in a "fab town where all the houses are cheap and someone saw Lady Gaga and everyone is gay” while “fashion forward” young couples, deciding that Utopia Falls is where they have to be, buy a house--“It was a bargain, only 750K!” When the city is terrified by three spectacular murders of prominent new residents, Jeremy realizes that the method and brutality of these shocking crimes echo equally shocking crimes he has uncovered in his research into the city’s past.
