What number of persons do you employ, as perma-nant employees, yearly at the scales ? A. Twelve or thirteen. Q.. What are their names ? A. Notley B. Anderson, Thomas B. Gatch, John Rus-kell, James E. Maguire, Thomas Baldwin, Lewis Cross, John L. SlinglufF, Charles J. McAleese, Samuel Hart, James Gephart, Philip L. Moore. Q. Did these gentlemen all receive equal salaries ? A. No sir. Some received sixty-two and a half dollars per month, some seventy-live and others one hundred dollars per month. Q. Did you consider this number of men necessary for the proper transaction of the business entrusted to your charge ? A. Owing to some of the men being sick nearly all the time it was necessary to have this number to transact the business. Q. Did you pay these men while they were sick and thereby incapacitated from performing the duties for which they were engaged ? A. Yes. Certainly. Q. Did you, during your administration pave any of the eattle-pcDS, and if so by whose solicitation ? A. Yes sir. I paved a number of pens at the solicitation of the cattle dealers who occupy them. They said it was unfair that some of the dealers had their pens paved while others had not. I consulted with the Governor who agreed with me that the pens should be paved. Q. Did you make any other repairs ? A. Yes. Repairs werebciog made nearly all tbe time, made necessary by the cattle knocking down fences, as well as the natural wear and tear from weather.
