The Revolutionary War gave a check to the exportation of leaf tobacco from which it has never recovered. For 31 years immediately preceding the war the annual exports had steadily and regularly increased, but for the first 50 years after it they remained stationary, except when interrupted by wars or other commercial embarrassments. The explanation for this decrease was that the European countries, during the war, went exten sively into the culture of tobacco and thereafter depended less on the western world for their supplies.
