An elven woman stumbles upon him, and the two have a less-than-friendly start. After helping one another out of a few traps, the two become unlikely travel companions, passing through several territories dotted with orc bandits. Reimar learns that the elf is on a quest to find the mythical Shattered Sword, an item he believes to be just that: mythical. Things become more complicated as they encounter several seers (or, as Reimar views them, crazy homeless con artists) who speak of prophecies concerning the coming rise of the black and red dragons. The seers warn of the destruction of Yaerna, and the decimation of the humans, dwarves, and elves.
