Not illustrated. 1895 Excerpt: ...Catalan; Colonel Thornton with the Light Brigade (4th, 85th, and 95th Rifles) advancing and taking up a position with his right resting on the high road to New Orleans, and his left on the Mississippi. During the evening, Thornton was attacked by an American force, supported by an armed schooner and two gun-boats which had dropped down the river from New Orleans. After a sharp hand-to-hand fight, the enemy were repulsed; but tovards 10.30 P.M., the American General, Jackson, advanced a strong column against the British centre. Thornton had now been reinforced by four companies of the 2ist, and the grenadiers and part of a battalion company of the 93rd, under Lieutenant-Colonel Dale, 93rd, and Dale being ordered to move his Highlanders to the front, and "use the bayonet," the Americans fired one volley and retired. One more desperate attempt was made against the Light Brigade, which was successfully repulsed; the Americans then finally retreated, and by midnight the firing had ceased on both sides. During the fighting, the 2ist lost Captain Conran and two men killed; one sergeant, two drummers, and eight men wounded; two men missing.1 On the 25th, Major-General the Hon. Sir E. Pakenham and MajorGeneral Gibbs arrived in camp, when the former assumed command of the troops, who were now all disembarked, and mustered about 5000 men.
