Description:Introduction: Here is a monolog filled with references to the works of Edgar Allen [sic] Poe. This is a performance piece meant to be spoken aloud in front of an audience. There are no props necessary and the costume for the actor can be as simple as black pants, white shirt, a vest and black string tie to reflect the age and dress of the time when Poe lived. Although, I have also performed this monolog wearing a colorful vest and a solid color shirt. Speaking time is about 5 minutes. History of The Farewell Kiss: This homage to Edgar Allen [sic] Poe was written one late night in 1975. The piece, in different versions, has been performed on college campuses, on the radio, on the stage and appeared in print. Originally, I delivered this monologue as part of an ensemble of comedy skits performed by the comedy group, Nobody Imparticular. Later it was placed before theater audiences in California and elsewhere in the country. This comedy oration lends itself to controlled drama and will spark both laughter and delight as the audience realizes how clever they are in recognizing the many Poe references. Who should use this monolog: Students may want to perform this as part of an assignment in acting class. It may also come in handy as a quick audition piece. Amateur theater groups doing ensemble nights will find this will fit in well with a line up of songs and skits.
