Description:Ohioan, Tom Patterson, after the loss of his wife of more than 20 years, and his children moving on to their own lives, has decided to try to find an old flame, Dianne Wolfe, who, along with friends, Pete and Mary, left him for California in 1967. In spite of her promise, he'd never heard from her again. He found enough clues to believe he might find her somewhere in California, probably the LA area. This was before the internet and Google, so his clues are based on phone calls to a reporter at the LA Times who knew her during her work as a reporter there, and through friends of Pete's at a Porsche dealership in Santa Monica. During his drive to California, Tom stopped overnight in the small Kansas city of Salina where he encountered a young, desperate woman who missed her bus for the first leg of her trip to San Diego. Tom offered to help Suze Arnold try tocatch her bus at the next stop in Hays,Kansas, but they are too late, the bus having left before they arrived. After considering the alternatives, Tom offers to let Suze ride all the way to California with him. Suze has left home and has no intention of returning and is determined to go on with her very limited funds. Tom's offer is a godsend and she accepts theoffer. She tells him that she is on a quest to find her birth mother, who she believes is also in California. Together they drive the next two and half days to the beat and lyrics of Dylan and other '60s and '70s music, getting to know and enjoy each other, sharing their life stories and motives for their quests. Suze has an unusual love and knowledge of '60s and '70s music, and they find a strong bond has developed between them, as though they'd been good friends all their lives. Tom drops Suze off at her aunt and uncles house in San Diego and departs for Los Angeles: both are now left to pursue their separate quests, and even though promising to stay in touch, both doubt they'll see each other again. But they do.
