Description:Buckingham County suffered significant losses of its early court records. This scarcity of records makes this tax list transcription a valuable one. Unique in its approach, with an aim to faithfully preserve, as fully as modern type will permit, the spelling and “feel” of the original tax lists. Years in the making, painstakingly and meticulously transcribed without the usual omissions, checked, rechecked and researched. Spanning a period of 29 years (1764, 1773-4,1782-92) with over 12,700 individual records enumerating 39,000 tithes, names of slaves, annual summary table and graphs, plus a host of other information that will illuminate the lives and social structure of the county during the late Colonial and early Federal period. The curious researcher will find much of interest here. Included are the names of the taxpayers, their taxable male cohabitants, their slaves’ names, number of their slaves, horses and cattle along with other taxable items like riding carriages and acres of land. These tax lists are transcribed just as the original lists are written; the format, layout and order along with all information recorded is preserved, allowing neighbors and family members to be identified. Includes a 25 page introduction providing a historical background, detailed explanations of the book’s features and format, a table of alternate surname spellings and a table of abbreviations found in the manuscript, a guide for using the reference work, appendices and a complete bibliography and reference section to aid continued research.
