Perhaps we think differently about them now from What we did some time ago, and by the new survey a progress of opinion may be proved, just as the mariner may see how far he has ﬂoated on the bosom of the ocean, by looking again at the buoy that has been erected amid its surging currents. And as in the case of the mariner, all well-meant observations are considered worth reporting, to be corrected by those who stand in higher places of inﬂuence, so I may venture to describe some of the bearings of the doctrine of human nature, as they appear at the present time amid the changes of views through which we have all been passing.
