Description:Excerpt from The Annual Report of the Connecticut Historical Society: Containing the Reports and Papers Presented at the Annual Meeting Held on May 16, 1961 Together With a List of Officers Then Elected, and of the Accessions Made During the Year Fortunately, we do have the manuscript catalogue of 45 paint ings exhibited at Gilman's Hall, April 21, 1840, at the celebration by the Historical Society of the zo15t anniversary of the adoption of the Fundamental Orders. At that time the Society owned the portraits of the Rev. Elnathan Whitman and Lady, and a painting of the Royal Arms. Also listed are the following, owned by the Hartford Museum: portraits of Gurdon Saltonstall, Roger Wol cott, Eleazer Wheelock, and Oliver Ellsworth. On May 15, 1844, the Society held its Annual Meeting in New Haven. A report was made on the condition and prospects of the Society by Samuel H. Parsons. He stated: They [chs] have also numerous portraits, busts, and engravings of eminent men of this and other countries. Among them are Governors Saltonstall, Wol cott, Treadwell, and Ellsworth, Gen. Hamilton, President Harri son, Henry Clay, and many other distinguished statesmen, also of many eminent divines among whom we find the Rev. President Wheelock, the Rev. Elnathan Whitman and the Rev. Dr. Strong of Hartford, Rev. Dr. Joseph Sewall, Thomas Prince, Benjamin Cole man, with many others too numerous to mention.
