For, to its fidelity are intrusted the examples of our ances tors; the vicissitudes of things; the foundations of civil pol icy and the name and reputation of men. But, -he adds, the difficulty is no less than the dignity. For to carry the mind in writing into the past and bring it into sympathy with antiquity diligently to examine; freely and faithfully to report, and by the light of words to place, as it were, be. Fore the eyes, the revolutions of time; the characters of per sons; the courses and currents of actions, is a task of great labor and judgment, rather because in ancient transactions the truth is difficult, to ascertain, and in modern, it is danger ous to tell.
