Further, there was need to collect and analyze a large volume of material in a comparatively short period of time. Therefore, the Commissionsought the services of experienced individuals and organizations to assist its staff in the study. Experts and consultants were engaged to perform research in specialized areas. Papers were commissioned concerning a variety of subjects related to the problems of school segregation. All material provided to the Commission from outside sources has been analyzed by the Commission and its staff. Conferences were held with school administrators and teachers to ob tain the views and suggestions of those who have working experience in both segregated and desegregated public schools. The Commission also held hearings and conducted investigations in a number of cities to learn from parents, teachers, community leaders, and school officials how American communities are meeting problems of race and education.
