Description:Excerpt from The Primitive Polity of Christian Churches: A Discourse, Delivered at the Public Recognition of the Rev. George Y. Jeffreys, as Pastor of the Congregational Church, in Durban, Natal, October 25th, 1857 The term church, however, is often used in the Scriptures, to denote a particular organized company of Christians, a religious Society, formed, and accustomed to meet in one place, for the worship of God. It is the church in this sense, with which we are most concerned, and the essential elements Of whose character and polity are sketched in the Scriptures for our instruction and guidance. In attempting to unfold the subject already propounded, I remark: I. A Christian church, according to the New Testament pattern, is A voluntary association OF true believers IN christ. This proposition contains two ideas. One is, that genuine believers in Christ, those Who have been born of the Spirit of God, and made new creatures, are the only proper members of a Christian church. Such were the persons spoken of in the text, the persons who belonged to the church of Ephesus. As the Apostle saith: Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. They had undergone a radical change of moral character.
