It has graduated nearly five thousand. The Medical Department of the University of Tennessee was organized in 1876. It has more than two thousand alumni. The two medical schools were founded by the same men, the names of Drs. J. Berrien. Lindsley, Paul F. Eve, Sr., and W. K. Bow ling being prominent ih the history of each. As colleges they were both established by the State of Tennessee to carry out the purposes of an Act of Congress which granted to the State two townships of public lands, which were to be sold and the proceeds applied to the establishment of two colleges, one in East and one in West Tennessee. Thus arose East Tennessee College and Cumberland College, each based on a previous foundation, Blount College and Davidson Academy, respectively. They have both been always un denominational in character. It is fitting that they should be now united in the service of the State and of humanity.
